Tip 12

Don’t struggle all alone

Tip12 - Don?t struggle all alone "You can get more from your recruitment agencies by treating them as partners rather than just suppliers. Share your recruitment and development plans, pool your knowledge and agree a joint approach. Together you are more likely to identify new sources of recruitment, better ways of accessing candidates and effective mechanisms for upskilling under-qualified applicants. Similarly, alliances with other local employers can lead to joint programmes to improve the pool of talent that you can all draw on." - Hugh Piper, Head of IBM Accounts EMEA, Manpower plc

Many companies bemoan the activities of recruitment agencies in dealing with IT professionals. They are never going to be a popular business at a time of skills shortage, when the activity of recruitment is so hard for companies to achieve without their support. Some employers, that have started to work closer with their recruitment agency partners, have found that they are able to turn the tide and improve the impact that agencies can make to the success of their business.

When recruitment agencies really understand the business goals and skill needs of an organisation, they can go on to really earn the commission that they charge for bringing talent into an organisation. Encouraging recruitment agency partners to think strategically about the contribution that they can make, by supplying a broader variety of people with different skills and experiences, has helped businesses to gain a far more cost-effective service from them.

It is not just joined up thinking with recruitment agency partners that can help avoid skill shortages, but the involvement of other supply chain businesses in tackling the issues. As a particular specialist skill need increases, often supply companies will take on that role for companies, providing an outsourcing option to cover that activity. It can make sense for employers focus on their core business and to establish relations with key supply chain partners to deliver on specialist activity. Some companies have become aware that, along with the outsourcing of services goes the recruitment issues that goes with these growth areas. Asking partner organisations to establish a skills strategy can be a useful way to ensure that they maintain stability for the future. It also highlights ways in which companies can work together to provide training and development resources for new and existing staff, providing each others' staff with services can be a very cost-effective way of building a skilled workforce for the future.
