Background Information
Foundation degrees are designed to supply highly qualified graduates to address the shortage of people with intermediate-level skills in a wide variety of professional areas determined by employer demand. These courses are underpinned by academic learning and focus on the acquisition of generic and technical skills gained in part from learning in the workplace.
Foundation degrees can also make higher education more affordable, accessible and appealing to a wider range of students. The foundation degree can be completed in two years or an equivalent period part-time. A wide range of students are expected to take foundation degrees including those who want to study part-time to improve their career prospects while continuing to work.
A graduate with a foundation degree is expected to be immediately attractive to employers. However, students may also have the opportunity, either immediately or some time in the future, to complete an honours degree by additional study of no more than one and a third years (when taken full-time or an equivalent period part-time).
In the long run, it is anticipated that Foundation Degrees will replace current HNCs and HNDs (Higher National Certificates and Diplomas).
