What is SFIA?
The Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) provides a common reference model for the identification of the skills needed to develop effective Information Systems (IS) making use of Information Communications Technologies (ICT). It is a simple and logical two-dimensional framework consisting of areas of work on one axis and levels of responsibility on the other.
It uses a common language and a sensible, logical structure that can be adapted to the training and development needs of a very wide range of businesses or simply used off the shelf.
It is easily accessible to:
-
ICT practitioners and users
-
employers
-
education and training providers; and
-
government

Developing SFIA
The Framework has been validated through a series of pilot assessments of large and small organisations in the private and public sector. These have been conducted by independent professional assessors from the BCS and from the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE). The results of these assessments are being fed back into continuous improvement of the Framework and the tools that surround it.
The success of these tests has proved that SFIA is robust and ready for progressive rollout and adoption, supported by the documentation it needs to be useful.
For full details of SFIA and the organisations that help build the Framework, please refer to the Introduction to the SFIA document. Further information is available under "
