The CCNA exam () objectives as at Summer 2000 vs Installing and Supporting IT Systems Level 3

These two qualifications relate to people installing networking systems. The Cisco Certified Network Professional will have knowledge of installing, configuring and operating LANs, routed WAN and switched LA Networks. The Supporting IT Systems Level 3 proves that you can successfully perform a range of functions in the field of installing and supporting IT Systems.

They overlap in the area of technical knowledge. If you already have the Cisco qualification then this will count against some of the knowledge requirements of the SVQ or NVQ.

In summary:

  • CCNA proves a candidate has current and extensive knowledge of the Cisco IOS and particular Cisco networking hardware.
  • S/NVQ provides evidence of competent performance in a range of real world situations covering wider aspects of the IT environment possibly using a range of hardware and/or software.
  • A combination of the two will prove competent real world performance underpinned by extensive specific Cisco product knowledge.

Both qualifications serve useful purposes but together they provide a uniquely effective method of measuring a candidate's performance and potential.
