Vocational degree courses

About 10,000 students a year do decide to take an IT related degree. Yet again, there is a bewildering variety of options and two courses can have very similar names with quite different content. In some universities the courses are highly practical, whereas others have a much more theoretical bias. Some courses span a broad area of study; others such as Computer Games Design or Artificial Intelligence have a more specific focus. You can opt for a course, which includes one or more industrial placements, and there are a variety of qualifications on offer including 5 year programmes leading to M. Eng. degrees.

Entry qualifications vary between 6/8 UCAS points at A level (the equivalent of 2 grades D & E) and 30 points (3 straight A grades) at just a few universities. Some courses require Maths or a science at GCSE or A level. Foundation courses are available in some universities for entrants who cannot initially meet all the usual entry criteria.
