Career Development Loans

If you're planning to do some learning related to a job and you can't afford to pay for it, a Career Development Loan (CDL) may be the answer.

You can apply to borrow between £300 and £8,000 to pay for:

  • up to 80% of your course fees as well as
  • the full cost of books, materials and
  • other expenses such as travel and childcare - and
  • living expenses if it's a full-time course
  • up to 100% of your course fees if you have been out of work for more than 3 months

The Department for Education and Employment pays the interest on the loan while you study. You don't need to pay back the loan until you've finished studying and you're in a job. The Department for Education and Employment operates the scheme in partnership with four high street banks. Loans of between £300 and £8,000 can be applied for to pay for up to two years of training (or up to 3 years if the course includes work experience). The Department pays the interest on the loan for the period of the training and for up to one month after.
