Adam Fox is a second year student on the IT GNVQ at Farnham College. He undertook a 2 week work placement at Surrey University in the Administrative Computing Support Department.

Placement Tasks
|
|
The department supports over 800 university users on its NT network and, at the time of Adams placement, was experiencing virus problems. Adam contributed to a project to install virus software on over 200 machines. This involved configuration set ups, installation and testing of software and working closely with users.
|
|
Relevance of GNVQ studies
|
Adam had developed key technical and interpersonal skills through his GNVQ course. His placement supervisor Roger Sampson, Support Implementation Manager, highlighted the following abilities:

Good background knowledge of computers, how they work and of user perceptions

Hands on knowledge of Windows NT

Ability to work with others and on his own initiative

Adam is a good team player but also works well alone.

The essential part of Adams job was to identify and solve problems. These were handled by Adam effectively with good communication. He showed constructive and practical solutions to problems encountered
